It was great reading everyone’s feedback on a blog about how expensive head lice removal services can be. Are they really worth it? I think so and not all lice removal companies charge ridiculous fees like the $300 dollars per person I read about. If you compare what a person may pay for a plumber, electrician, maid or any other home service worker, I think a $60 to $80 dollars per hour fee is a fair asking price for the hard work that services like this preform. Most average visits are 1 to 3 hours. I also think the most important part of what a lice removal company can do for a family is to educate them and give them peace of mind. I've read some of the remedies that people have suggested on the blog and some of them may not be a safe and effective a suggested. The bottom line is removing lice eggs is hard work and very time consuming. A professional can do it faster and better than the average person and some parents really do not have the time, desire or knowledge to do it. They may also be overwhelmed by having to treat several kids or mom may even have it herself. As a mother of three, two of then being six year old twins. I would hire one of my consultants to do the job simply because I know my kids may not site as well for me as they would for someone else. Besides I pick lice all day so I don't want to take my work home with me L0L. At the end of the day it is the consumer that has to decide if this is a service of value to them. It breaks my heart when I hear a mother on the other end of the line tell me that she has been struggling with head lice for months. It bothers me even more when I asked what she has tried and she says everything. My main question is how many pesticide applications have you used and the answer is an average of 5 to 6. It's not moms fault because she is doing what she has been advised. Yet over exposure and over use of pesticide on children with head lice is becoming a more common occurrence. My mission is to stop that. If you have used a pesticide application the two recommended times and you still have lice. STOP using them. This leads me back to my company’s approach on head lice. I call it the TLC approach. If society wants to break the stigma and make this issue a little less prevalent, we all need to practice the following measures.

T is for TIMELY. Head lice need to be diagnosed and treated in a timely manner; otherwise they will spread to others in a group or family. Screening for lice and head checks need to be done regularly at places where large numbers of children gather and in every home. Spot an infestation early before it is allowed to infiltrate a group or family over time. If found, lice have to be treated immediately and preventive steps must be taken so that when treatment is occurring, others in the home or environment do not pick it up during this time. For the person who has lice and does not know it or knows it but does not treat it right away, the infestation can take hold quickly and be harder to get rid of. Dealing with lice in a TIMELY manner means being dedicated to regular head checks and when found, treating immediately and appropriately.

L is for LOVING. In realizing that lice make many people feel ashamed, afraid and outcast, we need to do our part to help banish the myth that there is something wrong, bad or dirty about having lice. We need to inject some humour, love and attention towards helping the head lice sufferer realize they are not alone, not to blame and certainly have nothing to be ashamed of. We need to lovingly help them get the lice and eggs from their hair in a safe and non-invasive way without letting frustration build. Ridiculing, segregating and getting angry with those who have lice only further imposes the stigma of shame. Shaving a girl’s head and over- applying toxic chemicals can also be viewed as abusive and potentially dangerous to the physical and mental health of the person suffering with lice. Love can conquer all things and it can indeed conquer lice when partnered with the proper knowledge and tools for treatment.

C is for the CORRECT APPROACH. Communities, lice sufferers, schools, camps, agencies and daycare centers need to be provided with accurate information, proper tools, and treatments that are safe. Following a systematic treatment regime in correlation to the lifecycle of the head louse has proven to provide the best results. Combining some form of topical treatment and manual lice egg removal using a specialized comb designed for this purpose over time truly is the best way to beat lice.

The next part of the TLC method is to TERMINATE LICE COMPLETELY -- from the head of the sufferer and the environment.

Once you have the proper tools, treatment schedule and product, your main goal is to terminate the lice from the head. More time should be spent doing lice egg removal than anything else you may have been advised to do. It is important to apply treatment as directed in the case of pesticide and in my opinion, stop using them if they fail to work the first two times. My recommendation is to use a safe non-toxic method that can be applied every 4th to 5th day for a period of two weeks. Combing should be done daily to remove nits. Lice eradication is a process of reduction. The environment needs to be taken care after every topical treatment has been done. So instead of wasting time on cleaning and laundry, your daily focus should be on lice egg removal. Cleaning every 4th to 5th day after each follow up treatment is enough. Spraying pesticides on your bed or in your environment in my opinion is not safe and does not cure lice infestations. Instead, vacuum items that have come in contact with lice. Place items in the dryer on high heat for 20 to 30 minutes. Or if you cannot vacuum or place items in a dryer, set these items aside for 24 to 48 hours as Lice die without a blood meal in this time.

It seems that the debate continues regarding the no nit policy issue. My personal opinion is that they work when done properly and they help to reduce lice infestations in the school population. I am very glad that my children's school has one because lice cases are identified early giving parents a head start on treatment and checking. I also appreciate that after I have done the hard work of getting the lice out of my children's hair that they are not sent back into an environment where they could easily get it back. The schools that Lice Squad Canada works with appreciate the help and report a lowing if not solving of their lice cases. STOP the STIGMA

Ontario Company Lice Squad Canada calls for an end to the STIGMA surrounding head lice.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see our society regard head lice with a little TLC instead of fear, shame and disgusts? For the individual who has contracted head lice, a TIMELY, LOVING and CORRECT treatment approach is needed. For the bugs themselves, a little TLC, TERMINATE LICE COMPLETELY works for me.

So often, the first reaction and response to this contagious condition is a step back, followed by fear, frustration, anger, shame and finger-pointing. Backs go up as the questions begin. Who has it? What do I do now? When will it be gone? Where did I get it from and why me?

We regularly hear news stories and read articles about the lasted outbreaks, chemical resistance issues, new cures, as well as stories that tug at the heart strings such as children being over exposed to toxic pesticides, girls having heads shaved and people trying remedies and myths with sometimes dangerous outcomes. No one wants to deal with lice and many will try whatever it takes to get rid of them.

Let’s clear the air on the STIGMA associated with head lice. If we look at the facts presented over the years we learn that lice are a human condition and they have been around since the beginning of time. Lice do not discriminate between race, religion, class or age. They prefer clean well-kept hair as their ideal environment but they can certainly be found in un-kept hair. It is hard to tell if lice are at an epidemic level right now as there does not appear to be any formal reporting systems in place. One thing you can be sure of is that where ever large groups of people gather, especially children, lice have a better change of spreading and multiplying. This is why many schools, camps and daycare centers experience periodic outbreaks. Some on a larger scale than others. This does not make them responsible or to blame as it only takes one unsuspecting child with active lice to enter into a group or home to create an outbreak.

"Each one could hatch a bug?" the mother asked. "Thank God you're here." When all the nits were gone and the mother had detailed follow-up instructions -- and had decided to purchase a comb and the secret potion -- Mucci hit the road again.
"That was mild," she shrugged. "Often we see 10 to 15 live bugs and more than 100 nits. I've treated everyone from a four-month-old baby to an 88-year-old grandmother," including the scions of some famous families. "There shouldn't be such a stigma attached to this," she said. "Look, I was the kid who got sent home all the time with lice. My father used to rip my hair out with the comb, scream. I had pesticides poured on my head . . ." She stopped to compose herself. "It's just, no child has to go through what I went through."
Then Dawn Mucci headed north for the next nitpick, quite unconcerned about the risk to her own head. "In five years, I think only one of my nitpickers has ever caught lice," she said before waving good-bye. "We're careful, and we avoid head-to-head contact with our customers. Obviously."

More on the business

A former garbage truck driver and certified aromatherapist, Mucci has sold 12 Lice Squad franchises in Ontario and envisions a national empire. "This morning I heard from a lady in Montreal: 40 out of 198 private school students were sent home with lice. And then there's the West! Every urban centre has lice." New franchises cost about $25,000, but she estimates that between home visits and school checks, a busy nitpicker can make $90,000 a year. Mucci herself charges $55 an hour.
Yet money isn't why she loves her job. "I like being able to help. Most of the people who call have been struggling for months, and have tried five or six over-the-counter treatments. It's not the plague, or bird flu. But it is bugs. On your head. People are generally very happy to see me," she says, stopping in front of a tidy brick house where a man waited anxiously on the front lawn. "That'll be the dad."
The dad greeted her with the reverential mixture of gratitude and desperation usually reserved for a top surgeon, cautioning that the atmosphere in the house was, well, "Stressful. My wife is going a little crazy."
Mucci, a willowy 36-year-old with long, sandy blond hair, marched in with a large black rolling suitcase and surveyed the scene. Two little boys, one with a newly shaved head, sat cross-legged on furniture covered in bedsheets, while their mother pointed sadly at the bare floors. "We've rolled up all our rugs. Start at the hot spots, the nape of the neck and around the ears," she instructed, then ran an electric comb through the child's hair. "If it stops humming, it's killed a live louse," she said, then pronounced him bug-free.
"See, hon? You did a great job!" the man told his wife, nearly dancing off to work after Mucci checked him and gently noted that while he did not have lice, he might want to invest in some dandruff shampoo. After the woman was also cleared, she studied Mucci's neatly labelled samples of nits and lice in plastic sandwich bags, and asked, "Where did lice originate, anyway?"
"There were lice combs in Cleopatra's tomb," said Mucci, inspecting the older boy's head, "and here is a nit." But it was too tiny, and too close to his hair's shade of brown -- "Nits are not white, like most people think," she said -- for anyone else to detect.

My company has been assisting and educating the public, families, schools, camps and daycare centers since 2001. Providing on site head lice removal services, free information and education. Our mission is to educate people and to help protect children from the potential dangers associated with the over use and abuse of pesticides. Head Lice termination

The next part of the TLC method is to TERMINATE LICE COMPLETELY -- from the head of the sufferer and the environment.



Once you have the proper tools, treatment schedule and product, your main goal is to terminate the lice from the head. More time should be spent doing lice egg removal than anything else you may have been advised to do. It is important to apply treatment as directed in the case of pesticide and in my opinion, stop using them if they fail to work the first two times. My recommendation is to use a safe non-toxic method that can be applied every 4th to 5th day for a period of two weeks. Combing should be done daily to remove nits. Lice eradication is a process of reduction. The environment needs to be taken care after every topical treatment has been done. So instead of wasting time on cleaning and laundry, your daily focus should be on lice egg removal. Cleaning every 4th to 5th day after each follow up treatment is enough. Spraying pesticides on your bed or in your environment in my opinion is not safe and does not cure lice infestations. Instead, vacuum items that have come in contact with lice. Place items in the dryer on high heat for 20 to 30 minutes. Or if you cannot vacuum or place items in a dryer, set these items aside for 24 to 48 hours as Lice die without a blood meal in this time.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see our society regard head lice with a little TLC instead of fear, shame and disgusts? For the individual who has contracted head lice, a TIMELY, LOVING and CORRECT treatment approach is needed. For the bugs themselves, a little TLC, TERMINATE LICE COMPLETELY works for me.

So often, the first reaction and response to this contagious condition is a step back, followed by fear, frustration, anger, shame and finger-pointing. Backs go up as the questions begin. Who has it? What do I do now? When will it be gone? Where did I get it from and why me?



We regularly hear news stories and read articles about the lasted outbreaks, chemical resistance issues, new cures, as well as stories that tug at the heart strings such as children being over exposed to toxic pesticides, girls having heads shaved and people trying remedies and myths with sometimes dangerous outcomes. No one wants to deal with lice and many will try whatever it takes to get rid of them.



Let’s clear the air on the STIGMA associated with head lice. If we look at the facts presented over the years we learn that lice are a human condition and they have been around since the beginning of time. Lice do not discriminate between race, religion, class or age. They prefer clean well-kept hair as their ideal environment but they can certainly be found in un-kept hair. It is hard to tell if lice are at an epidemic level right now as there does not appear to be any formal reporting systems in place. One thing you can be sure of is that where ever large groups of people gather, especially children, lice have a better change of spreading and multiplying. This is why many schools, camps and daycare centers experience periodic outbreaks. Some on a larger scale than others. This does not make them responsible or to blame as it only takes one unsuspecting child with active lice to enter into a group or home to create an outbreak.



This leads me back to my company’s approach on head lice. I call it the TLC approach. If society wants to break the stigma and make this issue a little less prevalent, we all need to practice the following measures.



T is for TIMELY. Head lice need to be diagnosed and treated in a timely manner; otherwise they will spread to others in a group or family. Screening for lice and head checks need to be done regularly at places where large numbers of children gather and in every home. Spot an infestation early before it is allowed to infiltrate a group or family over time. If found, lice have to be treated immediately and preventive steps must be taken so that when treatment is occurring, others in the home or environment do not pick it up during this time. For the person who has lice and does not know it or knows it but does not treat it right away, the infestation can take hold quickly and be harder to get rid of. Dealing with lice in a TIMELY manner means being dedicated to regular head checks and when found, treating immediately and appropriately.



L is for LOVING. In realizing that lice make many people feel ashamed, afraid and outcast, we need to do our part to help banish the myth that there is something wrong, bad or dirty about having lice. We need to inject some humour, love and attention towards helping the head lice sufferer realize they are not alone, not to blame and certainly have nothing to be ashamed of. We need to lovingly help them get the lice and eggs from their hair in a safe and non-invasive way without letting frustration build. Ridiculing, segregating and getting angry with those who have lice only further imposes the stigma of shame. Shaving a girl’s head and over- applying toxic chemicals can also be viewed as abusive and potentially dangerous to the physical and mental health of the person suffering with lice. Love can conquer all things and it can indeed conquer lice when partnered with the proper knowledge and tools for treatment.



C is for the CORRECT APPROACH. Communities, lice sufferers, schools, camps, agencies and daycare centers need to be provided with accurate information, proper tools, and treatments that are safe. Following a systematic treatment regime in correlation to the lifecycle of the head louse has proven to provide the best results. Combining some form of topical treatment and manual lice egg removal using a specialized comb designed for this purpose over time truly is the best way to beat lice.

I am quite upset with the way the school is handling the lice situation for they are allowing kids with nits to attend school, which in my opinion will only recycle the problem. Head Lice clients perspective on Stigma

You people must be angels. It is really devastating when you find out that someone or everyone in your family has head lice. There is so much stigma attached to this problem. People actually look at you differently. And try to stay away. How awful is that! My son just went through the whole ordeal, I notified the school and they chose to ignore the problem. Usually they send home a note letting other children and families know. I can tell you that it was so bad last year in my son’s class, they actually had to store their things in their own individual garbage bags daily. I certainly hope you are available when we need you next. If you have ever had lice before in your home, you certainly do not forget what they look like or how they make you feel.
